The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. You can adjust the monitor type of the unit's composite video output from 16:9, 4:3 LetterBox or 4:3 PanScan depending on the aspect ratio of the monitor you have connected.
- Parking Brake Wire: For safety and legal reasons, the KD-DV5400 is equipped with a video lock-out feature to prevent the viewing of a video source on a connected LCD monitor in the front of your vehicle while the vehicle is in motion. To watch a video source from the unit's composite video output when connected to an external video monitor located in the front of your vehicle, the vehicle must be parked with the ignition in the ACC or ON position and the parking brake engaged. There is a light green Parking Brake wire on the radio's harness for this connection.
- Control Screen: When the KD-DV5400 is connected to an external monitor, it outputs an on-screen control bar and a list of files/folders during play back of a DVD-VR, DivX, MPEG Video, MP3, WMA or WAV disc. Using the supplied remote control, you can select playback options as well as select between files and folders on a disc from the on-screen display.
- Dolby Digital Output: The KD-DV5400 supports Dolby Digital/DTS playback and features an optical digital output to stream the Dolby Digital/DTS audio signal to an optional surround sound processor, sold separately. When not used with an external decoder, the surround sound signal is downmixed to 2-channel.
- Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.
- Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item # 105KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.
- Preamp Outputs: The JVC KD-DV5400 features a set of rear 2.5 volt preamp outputs to connect the headunit to an external amplifier. The rear preamp outputs will fade with the rear speaker outputs on the headunit.
- Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set the clock, choose the time zone and daylight saving time, select the dimmer mode, select the external component type (changer or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display, switch between US standard and European tuning spacing, set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low), and several other operational settings.
- Custom Equalizer (c-EQ): In addition to manual bass and treble settings (-12dB to +12dB @ 100Hz and 10kHz), this unit also has six selectable preset tone control and Super Bass setting combinations. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Custom Equalizer modes are:
- Bass Treble Loud
- Rock +03 +01 On
- Classic +01 -2 Off
- Pops +04 +01 Off
- Hip Hop +02 +00 On
- Jazz +02 +03 Off
- User (Flat) 00 00 Off
- Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.
- Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-DV5400 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.
- Source Level: You can adjust the volume level of each source individually so each source is at the same audible level at the at the same volume setting on the headunit.
- D. Range Compression: This feature allows you to enjoy a powerful sound at low or middle volume levels while playing back a disc with a Dolby Digital soundtrack. The KD-DV5400 compresses the volume range between the loudest and softest audio sections of the disc.
- AM/FM Title Assignment: You can assign titles to 30 station frequencies (FM and/or AM) using 8 characters (maximum) for each title.
- Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off. In the PSM menu, the clock can be set to display with the unit on or off, only turning off when the ignition is turned off ("keyed" operation).
- Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display and button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times) or On (display and button illumination is always dimmed). Note that the amount of dimming is fixed; it cannot be adjusted.
- Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.
- Disc Résumé: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.
- Detachable Face: The unit features a detachable face to deter theft and comes supplied with a hard plastic carrying case.
- Wireless Remote Control: The KD-DV5400 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK252). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking and Volume functions. The remote is used to control the unit's on-screen playback menu, when connected to an external monitor.
- External Device Controls
- iPod Control: The optional KS-PD100 iPod adapter (sold separately) allows an iPod portable digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-DV5400 and display the following: CD Text, MP3 folder/file names, or ID3 Tag information. All your iPod buttons will be disabled when connected to this adapter and the iPod will be controlled from the JVC receiver. With this optional interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through the JVC receiver and have all the titling information appear on the JVC's display. When this interface is connected to the JVC receiver, you cannot connect a CD changer. The adapter is made for audio file playback only, so it won't pass video signals from video capable iPods. Your iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-DV5400.
- Note: The optional KS-PD100 is compatible with iPods that have a dock connector, including the following models: iPod with dock connector (software version 2.3), iPod with Click Wheel (software version 3.1), iPod mini (software version 1.4), iPod photo (5th generation - software version 1.2), iPod nano (1st, 2nd, 3rd generation) and iPod classic. The KS-PD100 is not compatible with the Apple touch or iPhone.
- Satellite Radio: This unit supports both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio when used with the optional Satellite Radio tuner and adapter (sold separately. The KD-DV5400 supports the Sirius Connect Universal Vehicle tuner and JVC KS-SRA100 Sirius Satellite Radio interface (700SIRJVC1, sold separately). Currently there is no XM adapter available for this unit. You can also connect a Satellite Radio Plug-and-Play tuner to the unit's front-panel Auxiliary input.
- Changer Controls: This unit is equipped with JVC's J-Link CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer, item number 257CHX1500. Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.
